Kyran Durnin, 8, is believed to have been missing for two years in Ireland

The case shakes Ireland • “Extremely terrifying and heartbreaking” • Launches murder investigation

Kyran Durnin, 8, has been reported missing since August this year.
Now the Irish police start a murder investigation – at the same time they suspect that the boy may have been missing for over two years.
The case, which shocked Ireland, was described by the country’s prime minister as “extremely terrifying”.

It was at the end of August this year that eight-year-old Kyran Durnin, together with his mother Dayla, was reported missing in the port city of Drogheda in Ireland.

The mother has since been located – but the boy has still not been found.

“Despite intensive work, we have not been able to find either Kyran or any evidence that he is alive,” said the Garda Síochána, as the Irish police are known.

Starts murder investigation – despite missing body

Last week, a murder investigation was launched – although no body has been found.

Investigations into the case have also led the police to suspect that Kyran had been missing for at least two years. The last time he can be said with certainty to have attended a school was in the spring of 2022.

The incident has sent shockwaves across the green island. Many have wondered how such a young boy could be missing without a trace for such a long time, without anyone noticing.

– It is deeply upsetting and extremely frightening and heartbreaking. This child has been let down on many levels, says Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris.

Any tips from the public are welcome

On Monday, the police thoroughly searched a home that must have been inhabited by Kyran’s family until May of this year. At a press conference on Tuesday, the public was invited to contact the police for the slightest tip.

– We want to find out where Kyran is and what has happened to him. Any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, we welcome with open arms, the police announced.
