As of April 1, Postnord will not deliver mail as usual in certain residential areas. The background is new rules that give Postnord the opportunity to withdraw dividends for work environment reasons. The new rules upset residents in the Carlshem district in Umeå. Residents on Bärnstensvägen will soon no longer receive their mail in their usual box. One of them is Kurt Wandal, who is critical of Postnord’s handling. – They don’t want to deliver mail to a well-functioning mailbox. They want me to pay myself to get a mailbox in another place, he says. According to Postnord, the streets are too narrow and that all mailboxes must be moved to a common place some distance away for work environment reasons. – When our postmen used to be able to take small, thin letters out on their bicycles, they can no longer do so when the letters have been replaced by larger packages. Then we need bigger vehicles, and then it no longer works to deliver mail in the same way as before in these terraced areas with narrow alleys and poor visibility, says Henrik Ishihara, public affairs manager Postnord. The Swedish Post and Telecommunications Authority’s new regulations must, among other things, ensure that the elderly and the disabled will be able to receive mail to their door, while also allowing Postnord to withdraw dividends in certain areas. Up to 250,000 households in the country may be affected. See more in the player above.
