Kristersson and Andersson disagree about surrogacy

Ulf Kristersson (M) wants to allow surrogacy – carrying a child for someone else.

Magdalena Andersson (S) wants it to continue to be prohibited.

– There is a risk of pressure, she says.

The question was asked in the last prime minister’s duel on TV4. In the audience sat Josephine, who had been a surrogate mother for her friends. The procedure had to be settled abroad.

When will it become legal in Sweden? Josephine wondered.

Magdalena Andersson replied that she can understand the longing for children – but ultimately answers the question no.

– The background is the risk that exists in the form of pressure and hidden financial transactions even if the law were to be altruistic, says Andersson.

Altruistic surrogacy means that it takes place without payment. The issue has been investigated by experts who advise against changing the law, according to Andersson.

– So we don’t have such publishers. But I admit that it is a deeply difficult issue with heavy interests weighing against each other.

“Experience of involuntary childlessness”

Ulf Kristersson has a different course on his political boat. He says he spent a lot of time thinking about the issue.

– I also have experience of involuntary childlessness, he says.

The M leader says that he recently received an email from a surrogate family who told them about their trip.

– I have respect for the fact that people can think that the question is difficult. I still arrive at a clear conclusion: I want to change the legislation. I want us to legalize it in Sweden as in many other countries.

But it must take place without payment, emphasizes Kristersson.

– Why can’t a woman herself make a decision if you want to help a loved one to the most amazing thing you can get?
