Russia is making changes to its nuclear weapon doctrine, says the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov in an interview aired on Russian state television on Sunday.
According to Peskov, Russia has already prepared the upcoming changes, and plans to formalize them soon.
President of Russia Vladimir Putin told the National Security Council meeting on Wednesday of his desire to change the nuclear weapons doctrine so that Russia could use nuclear weapons in the future in response to a “massive air strike” on Russian soil.
According to Putin, Russia could respond with nuclear weapons in the future if it were to be attacked with missiles. In addition, according to the Russian president, nuclear weapons could also be used against an attack that would have been carried out with the support of a nuclear state.
The Kremlin’s talks about the change in Russia’s nuclear weapons line have been given as a response to Ukraine’s supporters, who are currently considering whether they can give Ukraine permission to strike the entire territory of Russia with Western missiles.
