Kraven the Hunter was released last week and is the last film in Sony’s Spider-Man villain universe whose main characters do not belong to the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). After Madame Web in February and Venom: The Last Dance in October, Kraven is the third Marvel film that Sony is releasing in cinemas this year, but the launch figures speak of a bitter setback.
Worse start than Madame Web: Kraven the Hunter chases in vain for a box office success
In Kraven the Hunter, Sergei Kravinoff (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), who has a complicated relationship with his father Nikolai (Russell Crowe), sets out on a quest for revenge. His goal: to become the greatest and most feared hunter in the world.
Sony’s villains from Marvel’s Spider-Man comics have grossed over $2 billion at the box office. However, Kraven the Hunter will not increase this number much, because just $11 million in its first US weekend recorded Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s big screen adventure. Mind you, for a film that, according to Variety cost over $110 million should have. Even the worldwide box office total of 26 million on the opening weekend doesn’t look much rosier.
Even if the previous Sony-Marvel films are not exactly known for their acclaimed quality, some have at least been high-grossing. Here you can find all the films in the universe Comparison of US opening weekend numbers in US dollars listed – according to Box Office Mojo, including the final box office result, which of course Kraven doesn’t have yet:
Venom (2018) – 80 million
(total worldwide: 856 million)
Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021) – 90 million (total worldwide: 506 million)
Morbius (2023) –
39 million (total worldwide: 176 million)
After Madame Web was already considered a flop with a start of 15 million US dollars, Kraven is another 4 million less new negative record for the SPUMC (Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters). But maybe Kraven, like Madame Web, will later be a Netflix success after the cinema flop?
US cinemas were instead, according to THR dominated by Moana 2 and Wickedboth of which launched in the USA at the end of November. Wicked has now grossed over $500 million worldwide and Moana 2 over $700 million. Like Kraven, The Lord of the Rings: The Battle of the Rohirrim also underperformed in this mix, managing just 4 million in its first US weekend (and 10 million worldwide).
