Kosovo closes border crossing with Serbia

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

The development comes after Serbs on their side of the border late on Tuesday used trucks and tractors to block traffic towards the crossing at the village of Merdare.

Kosovo police said in a statement that the blockade is unacceptable as it “impedes the free movement” of people and goods.

The EU and the US call on Kosovo and Serbia to calm down in a joint statement.

“We call on everyone to exercise maximum restraint, to take immediate measures to unreservedly de-escalate the situation and to refrain from provocations, threats and intimidation,” the EU and the US write after the announcement that the border crossing will be closed.

There has always been tension between Kosovo and Serbia, which has never recognized the new state that declared its independence in 2008. The situation has worsened in recent weeks.

Ethnic Serbs in northern Kosovo have during December set up roadblocks on country roads near the border with Serbia. Kosovo has requested that the NATO-led international peacekeeping force Kfor demolish the barricades. Shootings directed at Kfor and the Kosovo Police have also occurred.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced on Tuesday that the country’s military force on the border is being increased to 5,000 soldiers and put on the highest alert.
