Kolkata police chief fired over protests over doctor’s rape | News in brief

In India, the government of the state of West Bengal dismissed the police chief of the big city of Kolkata and two senior officials of the Ministry of Health because of the protests caused by the rape and murder of a doctor.

The body of the 31-year-old doctor was found in a state hospital in Kolkata on August 9. Since then, healthcare workers have demanded safer working conditions for women in large-scale protests.

The chief minister of West Bengal told about the sacking of the officials on Monday Mamata Banerjee. He had negotiated the matter with a protest group representing young doctors.

The group said it will continue to protest until the doctor’s murder is resolved. One man has been arrested as a suspect in the act.
