The National Guard in Buffalo has been going door-to-door with people who lost power during the deadliest storm in decades.
The snow has started to melt and as it disappears, the possibility of finding more victims increases.
The driving ban issued during the devastating blizzard in Buffalo, New York state, is expected to be lifted early Thursday. The temperature has risen and the snow has stopped falling.
During Wednesday, the National Guard knocked on doors in the city.
– We are afraid that there are those who may have died and lived alone or people who are not well, says Mark Poloncarz, chairman of the council in Erie County where Buffalo is the capital with its 275,000 inhabitants.
25 work teams from the National Guard went round the city and checked if the residents were in need of food, water or medicine.
At least 37 people have died in Buffalo during the storm. In total, at least 61 have been confirmed dead in the storm-hit areas of North America.
