A man was shot in the leg by police at a refinery at Hisingen in Gothenburg on Sunday evening.

The police were alerted at 23.43 that a man armed with a knife had illegally entered the area by climbing over the fence. The man allegedly threatened and chased several of the staff, who locked themselves in, the police write on their website.

Via cameras, they could then follow how the man walked around the premises, also armed with a hammer which he used to break a window.

The police first tried to stop the man, who lashed out with the hammer, with pepper spray. When this failed, the police fired a shot that hit the man in one of the legs. He was conscious when he was taken to hospital by ambulance.

None of the staff were physically injured. The police are investigating the incident as a serious illegal threat.
