Providing information about functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), Otorhinolaryngology Specialist Op. Dr. “The advantage of this surgery is that no incisions are made on the nose and face,” said Battal Tekin. Dr. Tekin shared how the operation was performed and what should be considered after the operation.

Providing information about functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), Otorhinolaryngology Specialist Op. Dr. Battal Tekin explained the purpose of the surgery as follows: “FESS surgery; It is a surgical operation performed to open or widen the flow paths between the sinuses near the nasal cavity and the nasal cavity by using an endoscope in order to reorganize the deteriorated ventilation of the sinuses. In this surgery, it is aimed to restore the functions of the sinuses to normal. With the help of endoscopes at different angles connected to the camera and micro-instruments of the appropriate size, the surgery is performed by entering only through the nostrils without making any incisions.”

Stating that the operation is performed under general or local anesthesia according to the patient’s condition, Op. Dr. Battal Tekin said, “FESS surgeries are one of the most frequently applied treatment options in the treatment of chronic sinus inflammations, sinus polyps, sinus-derived tumors and tissues adjacent to the sinuses, trauma-related orbital damage and visual nerve compression.” Dr. Tekin stated that the FESS technique is also frequently used in the treatment of many diseases such as chronic sinusitis, nasal polyposis, inverted papilloma, intranasal tumors, sinus tumors, cerebrospinal fluid leakage.

Kiss. Dr. Battal Tekin, “Who can be applied FESS surgery?” He answered the question as follows: “Endoscopic sinus surgery is mostly performed in patients who do not get an adequate response despite appropriate drug therapy and whose chronic sinusitis problem persists in tomography examinations. It is also preferred in the treatment of nasal polyposis, choanal atresia repair, sinus mucocele, optic nerve decompression and antrochoanal polyps.

Talking about the advantages of FESS surgery, Op. Dr. Battal Tekin said: “With the help of endoscopes in FESS surgery, surgery can be performed completely inside the nose without the need for any incisions on the nose and face. In addition, the areas that cannot be reached with classical methods or cannot be seen well by the surgeon can be reached much more easily with endoscopes. FESS surgical technique; It provides surgical intervention for only diseased tissues without damaging healthy tissues. With the FESS surgical technique, both the risk of complications are reduced and the recovery period is shortened.”

HEAT should be avoided and heavy exercise should not be done

Kiss. Dr. Battal Tekin also listed the things to be considered after FESS surgery as follows: “After the surgery, the patient should be followed up in the hospital for at least 1-2 days. If no complications occur, the patient is discharged. It is recommended that the patient rest for the first few days after the operation. In order to reduce the blood pressure in the head area, the head should be kept higher than the body. The temperature of the room where the patient is and the temperature of the water applied to the face while taking a shower should not be too high. Because the width of the nasal veins will increase in hot environments, the amount of bleeding may increase. It is normal to have nasal congestion for 24 or 48 hours after FESS surgery. There may also be a feeling of dryness or crusting in the nose. Heavy exercises should not be done after the surgery. In addition to all these, antibiotic treatment is recommended for 5-10 days to the patient.
