The chief protection officer decided on a protection stop last Thursday. The reason is that the school’s middle school is understaffed, which has led to too much workload for the staff.
Classes for the 220 middle school students have since been suspended, but will therefore resume again on Wednesday. The announcement came on Monday evening after the school had a meeting with all parents.
– We have presented the action plan that the staff and the principal have drawn up during the day, says Viktoria Björklund, head of the culture and education administration in Kiruna municipality.
New teachers on the way
According to her, a number of new teachers are on the way.
– We have both those who want to work a little shorter and those who want to work more long-term. We have also been given free housing so we can bring people here from other places.
As long as the school lacks full staffing, there will not be full school days either.
– But there will be school in the morning and afternoon for different groups. It won’t be full school days, but it will be in connection with lunch so that everyone can eat, says Viktoria Björklund.
“Must be taught”
The protective stop has prompted the School Inspectorate to act. On Monday, the authority sent a request to the municipality of Kiruna to report what measures are being implemented at the New Rocket School.
– Pupils must be taught, says the School Inspectorate’s press secretary Agnes Gidlund.
The authority wants answers this week. Depending on how the municipality responds, the School Inspectorate may have to start a new inspection. The school is already under review.
