Charles III will have a very different country to rule than Elizabeth II once did.
In Britain, the scepter has changed for the first time in seven decades. The late queen Elizabeth’s the eldest child is now king Charles III.
Charles became king the moment Queen Elizabeth died, says the British Broadcasting Corporation BBC (switch to another service).
He is officially appointed king within a day or so of the queen’s death. The coronation is more likely to be celebrated later than sooner. Elizabeth also once ruled for more than a year before the actual coronation.
Now 73-year-old Charles will become part of British history to be crowned as the eldest (you move to another service) monarch. His mother, the longest-reigning monarch in British history, was only 25 years old when she became the country’s ruler.
Until now, Britain’s oldest crowned monarch was the King William IVwho was 64 when he ascended the throne in 1830.
A different kingdom to rule
Charles gets to lead a very different United Kingdom than Elizabeth in the 1950s.
During her lifetime, Queen Elizabeth was a symbol of stability that united the nation, but the influence of the rest of the royal family around her has diminished over the years. In addition, Elisabet has always been more popular among the people than the rest of the family.
As King Charles, like his mother, also leads and maintains contact with the Commonwealth, which consists of many former British colonies. Its importance has weakened over the years, as more and more member countries leave Britain.
of Charles’s wife About Camilla officially becomes queen consort. Next in line of succession is Charles’ eldest child, the Crown Prince William.
Political campaigns end
As the Prince of Wales, Charles has become known during his life for his political stances and campaigning for, for example, environmental issues. The prince’s statements and letters to ministers occasionally aroused indignation in British governments.
In 2018, when Charles turned 70, he said BBC’s (switching to another service) in the documentary that he will change his ways if he becomes king. He emphasized that the roles of king and prince are completely separate and distinct.
As king, he would stay within the “constitutional limits”, outside of which all political positions remain.
– The idea that I would act in exactly the same way if I became king is complete nonsense, because these two institutions are completely different, Charles said in the documentary.
When asked about the continuation of public campaigning, Charles replied at the time as follows:
– It won’t continue. I’m not that stupid.
