Two Sarnia residents have been charged with kidnapping and forcible confinement after police say two people were rescued from a car Sunday morning, including one person who was trapped in the trunk.
The incident took place just after 8 am, when police said they received a report from a concerned citizen who said they saw a person being assaulted by two suspects with a bat in the area of Victoria and Davis streets. Police also learned the person had their clothing removed and was forced into a vehicle.
Officers went to the area, pulled the vehicle over nearby and found one person in the backseat.
“A second (person) was located in the trunk of the car,” police said in a statement.
Both people received medical treatment, but were not significantly injured, police said. The suspects and the people rescued were known to each other, police added.
Jody Hodgert, 44, and Gordon Jelavic, 47, both from Sarnia, have been charged with kidnapping, forcible confinement, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, police said. Hodgert was also charged with suspended driving under the Highway Traffic Act, police said. Both accused have been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
