An anthropology professor from Australia and two other researchers taken hostage by an armed group in Papua New Guinea have been released, Australian ABC News reports.
The research team was conducting studies near Mount Bosavi, a now extinct volcano in a remote area, when they were surprised by armed men. According to The Guardian newspaper, the group holding the scientists hostage demanded ransoms from both the governments of Australia and Papua New Guinea to release the prisoners.
The kidnapped professor, Bryce Barker, is a New Zealand citizen but operates in Australia.
