Khrystyna Hevchuk came to Nykvarn from Ukraine in 2022. Her mother had big problems getting the right healthcare in Sweden because she lacked a Swedish social security number. That made Khrystyna open her eyes to the problem.
In June 2023, she started a petition for Ukrainian refugees to receive social security numbers. In just a few days, it received 5,000 signatures.
Now she lives in Järna and is chairman of the organization RefugeeHope UA&SE, and together with other associations, such as the Ukrainian Cultural Association, during the year they have been happy that Ukrainian refugees received social security numbers in connection with their refugee status being extended.
No child support
And thanks to a new law that was hammered out in the Riksdag on Wednesday, everyone will now get a social security number already after a year in Sweden.
– It is good that you now have the opportunity to become part of society earlier, says Khrystyna.
But the change in the law also means that Social Security benefits will disappear for those who receive a social security number after 1 November.
– In order to integrate and find work, social support may be needed. Now those who have the hardest time getting a job will find it even harder.
What she is referring to is that the Ukrainian refugees who do not have a job will be without housing allowance and parental allowance. Child support also disappears.
Want to motivate to find work
The Tidö parties, who made the proposal, say for their part that it is an important matter of principle that it should pay to work. And that, compared to today, it is a big improvement for the group. Something Khrystyna Hevchuk does not agree with.
– If you don’t get access to the social insurance system after one year, as the new law says, when will you get it? Khrystyna wonders.
Hear in the video which parts the Ukrainian refugees, who have not already received a social security number, will be without.
