Construction worker Nikolaj left his home when the shelling of his area began. His apartment was hit by several rockets.
SVT Nyheter meets him when he and his son-in-law clean out the ruined home. Nikolai has Russian as his mother tongue but sees himself entirely as a Ukrainian. He follows both Russian and Ukrainian media.
– The Russians, of course, present themselves as kind and good. But if they had seen what I saw with their own eyes … They plunder and they kill children, women and the elderly, he says.
Fierce battles in the city
Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, heavy fighting with heavy shelling has been going on in and around Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city, which has been partly occupied by Russian forces.
For long periods, electricity, water and other important infrastructure have been lacking.
Recently, the Ukrainian military is said to have made some success in the area around the city, where a number of villages have been conquered.
