The British opposition Labor party wins the mayoral election in London – which means that Sadiq Khan is once again re-elected as mayor of the British capital, according to the BBC.

For Khan, the win means a third term in office. Khan was first elected in 2016, succeeding the Conservative Party’s (Tories) Boris Johnson, who later became Prime Minister. Khan then became the first Muslim to lead a major Western capital.

While Khan’s supporters tout his achievements, such as expanding house building, free school meals for young children and keeping transport costs in check, his critics say he has sidelined a rise in crime, opposed car use and allowed pro-Palestinian demonstrations to become a regular weekend feature.

The Tories have tiptoed ahead of the local elections. Recent opinion polls have been grim reading for the party led by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. This autumn, the party is threatened with a historic loss – according to the latest polls, Labor would take home around 70 percent of the seats in the British House of Commons if there were an election now. In such a scenario, between 250 and 300 Tory MPs could lose their seats.
