It’s uncertain whether we’ll ever see Kevin Costner in the Yellowstone universe again. The Hollywood star still remains true to the Western genre. This year he is bringing his first directorial work since Open Range from 2003 to the cinema. It’s a real one megalomaniac mammoth project.
Horizon and Horizon 2, which originally have the additional title An American Saga, will be released in cinemas in August and November. At CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Costner presented the films in which he also plays the leading role in more detail. This resulted in one unexpected revelation in regards to his son, Hayes Costner.
Kevin Costner named his son after his Horizon character so he wouldn’t forget the western epic
Costner wanted to bring his western epic to the cinema over three decades ago. He made his first plans in 1988 before taking up the project again in 2003. Ultimately, another 20 years would pass before he could actually implement Horizon. This is where his son comes into play, the one very specific name carries.

Kevin Costner in Horizon
Hayes Costner’s first name is the same name Costner gave his character in Horizon: Hayes Ellison. Costner told Entertainment Tonight that he was afraid of losing sight of the project. For years, his son’s name served as a reminder of his Horizon plans.
Costner explains in an interview:
I have [meinen Sohn] named after the character I played in [Horizon] games. My character’s name is Hayes Ellison. And I named Hayes after this character. So I watched him grow up and I thought, ‘Man, I better get myself together and make this movie.’ Western saga in the cinema: Kevin Costner and his son Hayes can be seen together in front of the camera in Horizon
Costner apparently wanted to be 100 percent sure that he didn’t forget Horizon as a film project. Now he has managed the complex western production together with his son, who is now 15 years old. Hayes Costner plays a supporting role in both Horizon parts – and perhaps even more to come in the future.
If everything goes according to plan, Costner will also shoot Horizon 3 and Horizon 4. The plan is to create an epic Western saga that spans several decades. However, the sequels have not yet been officially announced. For now, part 1 starts on August 22, 2024 in German cinemas before part 2 on November 7, 2024 follows.
