Kevin Costners megalomaniacal dream could herald the end of Yellowstone

You hardly notice it in this country, but Kevin Costner leads one of the most successful US series of the last 10 years at. Taylor Sheridan’s (Sicario) western intrigue-weaving Yellowstone is still breaking ratings records even in its fifth season and has spawned several offshoots, including 1923 with Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford.

For Costner, following his first miniseries success in Hatfields & McCoys, Yellowstone represented a career renewal that also enabled him to realize a dream. The 11-hour western epic Horizon would have been unthinkable for the director of the legendary flop Waterworld a few years ago. Now he’s in the middle of filming. But that epic could cost him hit series Yellowstone, new reports suggest.

The end of Yellowstone is said to be in the works

Paramount

Kevin Costner at Yellowstone

In Yellowstone, Kevin Costner plays the head of the Dutton family, which owns a huge ranch and is at odds with the surrounding communities. Allegedly, series creator Taylor Sheridan and Paramount are already planning the end (and the future) of the series. This is reported by the industry website Deadline. The following emerges from the notification:

  • The Filming of Horizon is said to stand in the way of Costner’s involvement with Yellowstone.
  • For the first half of season 5 he has already reduced his number of shooting days from 65 to 50.
  • For the second half of Season 5, the star reportedly wants only one week available stand.
  • This frustrates Tayor Sheridan and Disagreements with the rest of the cast.
  • Neither Sheridan nor Paramount agreed with Costner’s suggestion of fewer shooting days. Instead, they want to end Yellowstone as a series. But they already have a plan for the continuation of the Dutton story.

Matthew McConaughey is set to replace Kevin Costner

This is how Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey (True Detective) is said to be in Negotiations for a spin-off series condition. This is reported by Deadline and the Hollywood Reporter in unison. Accordingly, McConaughey would continue the history of the Dutton clan in a new series, which is also believed to be set in the present. It is currently unknown whether stars like Wes Bentley or Kelly Reilly will return.

The previously published Yellowstone spin-offs are prequels, which can be seen from the years in the title: 1883 and 1923. The spin-offs 1883 are also planned: The Bass Reeves Story and Yellowstone: 6666. The new project would be so to date fifth series from the Yellowstone universe.

The Hollywood Reporter notes, however, that the (carefully scattered) announcement of Yellowstone’s demise could provide leverage from Paramount in negotiations over the future of the series.

What Costner is planning with the western epic Horizon

It’s not surprising that Kevin Costner is so involved with Horizon. The director and leading actor wants the project as four-movie epic with around 170 speaking roles.

The 11-hour western is said to be about events in the American West in the 19th century. Around 15 years of history, set before, during, and after the American Civil War, will narrate the Horizon four-part story. The first part has already been shot. The cast includes Jamie Campbell Bower (Stranger Things), Sam Worthington (Avatar) and Sienna Miller (American Sniper).

Horizon marks Costner’s first directing film since Western Open Range (2003) and takes him thematically back to his huge hit Dances With Wolves (1990).
