The Western died a spectacular death in the early 1980s. For years nobody dared to approach the genre. Until he dances with wolves. Kevin Costner’s 181-minute epic is one of the films that re-populated cowboy adventures in the 1990s. To date, it is Costner’s highest-grossing film (via The Richest). It’s on TV today.
On TV: At first nobody wanted to know anything about Kevin Costner’s most successful film
Disabled US soldier John Dunbar (Costner) gets posted to the US frontier in the early 1860s, which borders directly on the settlement areas of indigenous tribes and is considered to be a fire hazard. After tricky overtures with the local Lakota tribe, he finally gets to know their traditions. And questions more and more the civilizing claim of his white culture.

Kevin Costner in Dances With Wolves
Dances With Wolves became a smash hit in 1990 (via The Numbers) and won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Shortly before, Costner had had to fight for the production, as reported by the LA Times. After the infamous Heaven’s Gate disaster, the Western was considered box office poison. Dances with Wolves helped bring the genre back to the cinema.
When is Dances With Wolves on TV?
