Kevin Costner thinks he messed up one of his best

Kevin Costner has delivered many outstanding acting performances in his career. One of the early role highlights of his work is the gangster film The Untouchables by director Brian De Palma. In it, Costner stars alongside legendary stars like Sean Connery and Robert De Niro. These days, Costner looks but itself rather critical back to his appearance in 1987.

Kevin Costner found himself too inexperienced for gangster films

De Palma’s film is set in 1930s Chicago during Prohibition, where gang boss Al Capone (De Niro) has a lot of power. Treasury agent Eliot Ness (Costner) still wants to catch the mafioso and put him in prison. When he initially fails, he asks veteran police officer Jim Malone (Connery) for help.

Last year, Costner spoke to GQ about his biggest films, according to Slash Film. He also looked back on The Untouchables. At the time, the star was particularly enthusiastic about David Mamet’s script saw the role as the perfect career boost.

Today, Costner is very critical of his acting performance in the film. In his opinion he was far too inexperienced:

I actually didn’t think Sean was the type of guy who would like me. I don’t know why, but he did. He was good to me. And I learned a lot because my eyes were open. I wish I had been a better actor when I did The Untouchables, but I was where I was.

Even though Costner is very self-critical, the status of De Palma’s film speaks for itself. With an average rating of 7.7 out of 10 points from over 11,100 votes from the Moviepilot community, The Untouchables is the best Kevin Costner film on this website.
