Kevin Costner knew nothing about his character’s shocking Yellowstone fate: This is how he found out about it

Kevin Costner knew nothing about his characters shocking Yellowstone fate

After months of guesswork about how Yellowstone dealt with the exit of lead actor Kevin Costner, the new episode of the western hit has finally revealed the secret. However, it was apparently not just the audience who were in the dark – but also Kevin Costner himself. Because the fate of his character was also revealed to him after broadcast occurred on Sunday evening.

Attention, follow from here spoiler to Season 5 Episode 9 of Yellowstone.

Kevin Costner didn’t know about the death of his Yellowstone character John Dutton

As Costner explained in an interview with SiriusXM, he had no idea that the new Yellowstone episode would air on November 10, 2024 in the USA:

I’ll be completely honest. I didn’t even know it was supposed to air yesterday. This is a swear-to-God moment. But I swear to God. I mean, I saw ads with my face on them everywhere and I thought, ‘Jeez, I’m not even in that.’ I’m not in this season.

Just like the timing of the broadcast of Season 5 Part 2, Costner had no idea how the Western series would deal with his character John Dutton. It was only after the broadcast that he heard what fate would befall the patriarch in his absence:

I didn’t see it. I heard it’s a suicide, so that doesn’t necessarily make me want to see it ASAP.

At the same time, Costner stated that he could imagine a larger plan behind the alleged suicide:

They’re pretty smart people. Maybe it’s a red herring. Who knows? They are really good. You will manage this.

While series creator Taylor Sheridan and Costner are said to have discussed a possible end for John Dutton in Yellowstone several times, according to Costner, suicide was never an option. After his departure from the series, he now leaves Sheridan and his team completely free to integrate the main character’s absence into the series.

Costner is wrong in his assumption that the alleged suicide is a red herring – that is, a wrong track ‒ acts, but exactly right. In the course of episode 9 of season 5, it is revealed that Jamie’s (Wes Bentley) lover and fixer Sarah (Dawn Olivieri) is behind the death of the Dutton boss on his indirect orders.

Yellowstone fans are disappointed by Kevin Costner’s John Dutton’s exit from the series

The Yellowstone fans were just as surprised by John Dutton’s sudden death in the series as Kevin Costner, and they had already expressed their displeasure with the series’ handling of Costner’s absence on X (formerly Twitter). So the death of the character after all these years and consequences does not do justice – even if alternatives were probably difficult to offer.

We’ll find out how John Dutton’s death will affect the rest of Season 5 Part 2 on AXN Black in the next few weeks. The latest episode has been available in the channel’s media library since yesterday at 12.30 p.m. and is celebrating today, Tuesday November 12, 2024 at 8:15 p.m its TV premiere in this country. A similar broadcast period can therefore be expected in the coming weeks.
