The first ever women’s 50 km World Cup race turned out to be an interesting battle for the top, compared to prior expectations. When Sweden Ebba Andersson and Frida Karlsson had to withdraw from Holmenkollen due to cold symptoms, the USA was expected from the race Jessie Diggins from the screen.

However, the top of the competition was decided in the final stretch between six athletes. The Norwegian champion took the first ever 50 km victory somewhat unexpectedly Ragnhild Hagawho overthrew his earthling By Astrid Slind and Diggins.

Haga, who achieved a personal Olympic victory in 2018, is not exactly known as a tough guy. The 32-year-old athlete has not been among the top women recently.

of Austria Teresa Stadlober managed, like Diggins, to break the tough Norwegian front and was fourth in the race.

Kerttu Niskanen was the best Finn, eighth and a half minutes behind the winner. Niskanen’s state of being after the severe wrinkling was good.

– It was a tough and great race, Niskanen stated.

Niskanen fell out of the top group of ten athletes after 35 kilometers. The race did not go exactly as planned for Niskanen.

– I started vomiting and the drinks spilled out. The penultimate round was really difficult. It had never happened to me before that I had to empty like that during a race.

– There was a bit of horror in the air, but it got easier in the last round. It even felt good.

“Nice to get off the track”

Great skiing Eveliina Piippo reached the top ten in the World Cup for the first time in his career. The 24-year-old Finn was tenth.

Piippo was cold after the race.

– It’s nice to get off the track.

He was still in the main group of eight athletes at about 40 kilometers, but dropped out of it after that.

– I already noticed after the first lap that it consumed a lot of energy when I was behind. That’s why the stations had to be raised.

Piippo’s career-best World Cup ranking was not the worst moment.

– More than half of the opponents missed the line. We are still quite satisfied now.

“Does not make any sense”

Emmi Lämsä was the 22nd Rebecca Immonen 31st and Vilma Ryytty 32:s.

Kerttu Niskanen’s lead in the distance cup dwindled to seven points. Diggins is second in that Cup. He collected several bonus points.

– During the initial trip, I had time to think about cereal, but that was what Diggins and Tiril Udnes Wengin. In the end, I didn’t get those points anymore. The main thing is that I got something.

Niskanen will ski in the Drammen sprint on Tuesday. After that, the season continues the following weekend in Falun, after which there are still the Tallinn and Lahti competitions.

– This makes no sense. Anyway, let’s go now that we’re in the game.
