Demonstrations broke out in Kenya in June against the government’s proposed tax increases. Some of the protests turned into riots, in which dozens of people died.
President of Kenya William Ruto announced on Thursday that he would dismiss almost his entire board and start consulting on the formation of a “broad-based board”. In the background are extensive anti-government demonstrations, which were violently suppressed by the country’s security forces at the end of June.
According to Ruto, the turmoil affects all board members except the foreign minister Musalia Mudavadia and vice president Rigathi Hacgagua.
The president says he decided on the dismissals after “reflecting and listening carefully to what Kenyans have said and as a result of a holistic assessment of the government’s performance, successes and challenges”.
Demonstrations broke out in Kenya in June against the government’s proposed tax increases. The country’s young people, who feel that the rising cost of living in the country is already unreasonable, showed their opinion. Especially in the capital Nairobi, the protests turned into riots, and dozens of people have died in connection with the intervention of the Kenyan security forces.
Ruto now says that he will start extensive negotiations with various sectors and political formations in order to form a broad-based government. According to the president, the new government would help him develop “radical programs” in tackling the country’s debt burden, increasing employment and eradicating corruption.
