Kenya on Monday (December 9th) launched an appeal to the Confederation of African Football to be included in the qualifiers for the next African Cup of Nations, the final phase of which will take place in Côte d’Ivoire in 2024. Kenya was excluded from the tournament after FIFA suspended the Football Federation of Kenya (FKF) in February 2022, accusing the government of interfering in the sport when it disbanded the national governing body. But FIFA agreed to lift the suspension in November of the same year following the Kenyan government’s decision to reinstate the FKF, which had been disbanded on suspicion of corruption. Kenyan Sports Minister Ababu Namwamba told a visiting FIFA and CAF delegation that the government was not interested in being involved in the direct management of football, only in ensuring that the sport was properly managed. The minister announced Kenya’s interest in participating in the 2024 Africa Cup, with a qualifying match between Kenya and Cameroon scheduled for March. CAF legal adviser Nadim Magdy, who was part of the delegation, said the continent’s football governing body would meet ” soon to discuss Kenya’s request.
