Keen on a Blenheim dog park Chatham Kent wants to hear

Residents interested in seeing a dog off-leash recreational area in Blenheim are encouraged to put their names forward this month.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is inviting expressions of interest from community members to form a committee to develop and operate the park, stated a release.

People can indicate their interest at letstalkchatham-kent.ca before 4:30 pm May 26.

Each Chatham-Kent dog park has been developed and managed by a community group of 10 to15 volunteers, over 18. Responsibilities include:

  • Fundraising for park capital infrastructure requirements (similar projects currently at $40,000-plus)
  • Fundraising for capital improvements or infrastructure renewal over time
  • Organizing, co-ordinating and implementing a schedule for ongoing site cleanup and maintenance
  • Reporting concerns or rules violations to the municipality.

One committee members will be appointed as chair. Time commitment for committee members can vary depending on park operation. Current committees meet several times a year.

Municipal council previously identified lands near Little Street South and Snow Avenue in Blenheim for a possible dog park.

Chatham-Kent has two designated dog parks, including John Waddell Dog Park in Chatham and Happy Tails Off-Leash Dog Park in Wallaceburg.

Another has been proposed for Dresden and awaits council designation and development.
