Katya, a young Russian, welcomes Ukrainian refugees in Budapest

It is estimated that of the 460,000 Ukrainians who entered Hungary, at least 70% continued on to other countries. But some need accommodation for a few days or stay in Hungary. Katya, a 32-year-old Russian who left her country ten years ago after the re-election deemed fraudulent by Vladimir Putin, has opened her door wide to Ukrainian refugees since the start of the invasion of Ukraine.

Despite the size of her apartment – 25 m² – she has already welcomed several families: “ First I put up two girls, with their two dogs and their cat. As I also have animals, it was a bit like a zoo in my studio! »

After helping the two Ukrainians find a job and a bigger apartment, Katya opened her door to other refugees: a mother and her daughter. “ It’s like a family to me! The mom, I call her “Mom”, she treats me like her daughter. My own parents don’t talk to me anymore. They are pro-Putin, they believe there is no war. »

“It’s been 100 years that power has destroyed our lives”

The fall of Vladimir Putin? Katya doesn’t believe it. According to the young woman who does not want to give either her name or her profession, Russia has only known dictatorship and will not come out of it. Katya is desperate. She breaks down in tears: Power has been destroying our lives and those of others for a hundred years. It will never stop, that’s what’s terrifying. »

Ten years ago, Katya fled her country. Like her, thousands of young Russians opposed to the invasion of Ukraine, take the road to exile.
