“125 years is actually not that old for a village,” says Jan Rood, board member of the Kermis-Oranje Association. “The village used to be around the castle. That castle was a ruin at the time. Pierre Cuypers, the baron who inherited the castle, had it rebuilt. He was like: dude, I think it’s great that I’m getting a castle, but I want those houses gone. So they moved them a kilometer. New houses have also been added.” Until 2000, Haarzuilens belonged to the municipality of Vleuten-De Meern. In 2001 this municipality was added to Utrecht. The village is now part of the Vleuten-De Meern district of Utrecht.
