Karsten Warholm got away with it after all – expert wipes the Norwegian superstar’s style: “A pretty big mocha”

Karsten Warholm got away with it after all

Athletics World Championships 19.8.–27.8. Ylen channels. See the schedule and broadcast information of the games at this link.

What are we talking about?

Norwegian superstar and world record holder Karsten Warholm the performance in the 400-meter hurdles semi-final became clear after the competition. Based on the slow-motion video images, it seemed that Warholm, who ran to the set win, used his leg outside the fence.

Finnish Sports Federation’s competition manager and rules expert Mika Muukka stated on Tuesday to that the foot can go outside the fence, but not below the fence line. So Warholm seemed to be acting against the rules.

Italy filed a protest, but it was rejected. Consequently, Warholm will be allowed to run in the final on Wednesday.

Warholm’s horrified situation can be seen in the following video.

– This is a pretty big mistake, Urheilu’s expert Jaakko Ojaniemi says.

According to Ojaniemi, it is typical for Warholm that he rotates his front leg by “throwing” the outside.

– Warholm’s authenticating technique is in a certain way risky, when he does not bring that foot directly in front of the lower leg. It may be that he has had a similar experience in the past, that the leg goes around the outside.

– It also seemed that the running position was really low. Wasn’t in a good running position when the second fence came up. It looked like he was headed for the fence.

Who surprised?

The last round of the discus final turned out to be surprisingly dramatic. Slovene Kristjan Čeh first shook 70.02 meters, after which Daniel Ståhl broke the wild World Championship record of 71.46.

You can watch the last two throws of the competition in the following video.

71.46 is the third best quote of Ståhl’s career.

– A good level of competition. It smelled already that Ståhl would take this one, but Čeh stretched nicely with his last throw. Then it seemed that it might be too hard for Ståhl.

Applauding Čeh’s performance, Ståhl stepped into the ring and raced far.

– That last bet was shocking. The experienced value thrower and athlete was still able to find a fair amount of improvement and went on to a clear victory.

Ojaniemi paid particular attention to Ståhl’s cool reaction.

– It was fun to see Ståhl’s reactions after the throw. His expression didn’t even waver. I don’t know how long it took for him to even smile. The charge was so strong, it didn’t even fully discharge after the last throw.

The length of Ståhl’s throw was also surprising. There was no help from the wind in the stadium conditions.

– Yes, it surprised me. Under such conditions, such a result. The World Championship record shows how tough the result is.

– Usually the value competition finals are thrown in calm weather. If you can get that kind of throw into a strong or suitable headwind, then you get a couple of meters more.

Who flopped?

There was drama in the three-legged final when the 18-year-old super promise Jaydon Hibbert was injured. Hibbert was the early favorite for the final, but his first attempt ended in disaster.

Hibbert stepped over his jump and interrupted his performance. The Jamaican held the back route and could no longer jump. Hibbert holds the season’s best score of 17.87.

– He was a strong champion favorite. He came through injury and couldn’t race, but it was a flop.

– We expected a great race from the triple jump final, and especially from him, but it went wrong. At least in my opinion it was the biggest flop today.

What next?

On Tuesday, the Finns will focus on the preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles, for example, when Reetta Hurske and Lotta Harala get up to speed.

Ojaniemi believes that both have good chances for a place in the semi-finals, although it requires good success. Ojaniemi thinks that for the semi-final place you have to run between 12.80 and 12.90.

– It requires a pretty good success from both.

In June, Hurske ran a Finnish record of 12.70 in Jyväskylä. Since then, he has run under 13 seconds several times and twice under 12.90 under permitted conditions.

Harala, on the other hand, has also clocked under 13 seconds many times and once under 12.85, which is also his record.

– Their level has been such in the last games that they have a good chance of getting between 12.80 and 12.90. I would estimate that the place in the semi-finals will be released.

– You don’t need a super good performance, but a basic good run should be enough for both.
