The former penalty corner specialist played a total of 177 times for the Dutch national team between 1970 and 1982. He scored 268 goals and is still the top scorer of the Dutch team. Litjens won the world title with the Dutch men in 1973 and participated twice in the Olympic Games in 1972 and 1976.
