Charlotte Baris: It is November 5 in the heart of the prestigious Howard University in Washington. In the afternoon, thousands gather on the large lawns in front of the main building. Some dance, waiting for the results, hoping to see their candidate in the evening. But shortly before midnight, the atmosphere in Kamala Harris’ campaign headquarters changed radically. Donald Trump has just won North Carolina, then Georgia: faces close, silence settles. The campaign manager then speaks.

Little by little, the activists are returning home. The university doors close as the giant screen continues to broadcast the results. The HQ is now deserted. All that remains are the white chairs, the signs left by the activists and some trash. The silence is broken by the duplexes of journalists from around the world who remained on site.

At the same time in West Palm Beach, Florida, the atmosphere is festive. As the evening progresses, the map of the United States turns red and smiles appear on faces. At Donald Trump’s HQ, all the supporters are still there and waiting for the Republican candidate to speak. Under their red “Make America great Again” caps, they chant “USA” and shout with joy. They are already celebrating a victory which is not yet official.

That night, Donald Trump made history with a resounding return to the head of the United States, while Kamala Harris saw her dream of the White House collapse. A resounding defeat that the United States will remember for a very long time…
