She takes the voters by storm and at the Democratic convention at the United Center in Chicago, enthusiasm reaches new heights and Kamala Harris has succeeded in uniting the entire party in a short time.
She has not yet succeeded in convincing the Americans of Arab origin, especially in the important state of Michigan. They cast their votes in the spring primaries.
But with rows of famous artists, actors and also former staunch Republicans close to Donald Trump, the convention has created a euphoria not seen since Barack Obama created in 2008.
Harris’s first big challenge
We are seeing a new political playing field where Trump is fumbling and has yet to find a strategy to face his opponent with – apart from the well-known personal attacks with racist and sexist slurs.
But the night’s big speech that closes the convention will be Kamala Harris’s first major challenge, where she is expected to lay out the guidelines for the future of the Democratic Party.
Little is known about what the speech will contain, but what will be decisive will be the impression Harris makes, not only before the convention delegates, but more importantly the millions of television viewers who are expected to follow her late tonight Swedish time.
Strengthened its position among young people
Harris, who for a large part of his professional life as a prosecutor put criminals behind bars, often emphasizes the importance of the principles of a legal society. She and the Democrats will tonight press the strength of the United States as a nation, a strong military power with support for veterans, but also work for the country’s position on the world stage.
She must get the millions of voters who have not yet made up their minds, and not least the so-called independents, to take her side.
According to opinion polls, she has strengthened her position among young, black and Latino voters.
“The time of surprises is not over”
But Kamala Harris has yet to face any tough challenges. She has not given any press conferences or stood up for interviews.
The first big test comes on September 10 when she meets Donald Trump in a live TV debate.
And then it remains to be seen whether the wave of success will continue until November. The time of surprises is not over.
