Charlotte Baris: Perhaps you recognize, dear listeners, this theme song. It’s the one from the series Modern Family. This sitcom wonderfully shows the American family of the 2010s, immersing us in the daily lives of several households. We particularly follow a blended family who must manage, among other things, cultural differences and integration with the in-laws. The objective is clear: modernize the image of families on television and challenge the traditional model. A certain vision of America and its ideal family, which we see as much on TV and in the cinema as in politics. Since Eisenhower’s 1952 campaign, nearly every American president has gambled on their marriages to score points in the race for the White House. And, at the same time, they showed their vision of the time.
Nixon and Reagan defended a traditional vision of the family, Obama and Clinton were more progressive. Today, it is Kamala Harris’ turn to place her own family model at the center of her political story.
