Kaisa Mäkäräinen and Petra Olli got to learn from retired golfer Mikko Ilonen in the first episode of Urheilustudio’s Jatkoerä program.
In the first episode of the new season of Ylen Urheilustudio’s Jatkoerä series Kaisa Mäkäräinen and Petra Olli were able to familiarize themselves with the secrets of golf Mikko Ilonen with assistance.
The second-round two’s touches on the golf turned out to be different when they arrived on the green. Mäkäräinen’s visits to golf courses have remained occasional, while Olli is already a somewhat experienced golfer.
Despite this, the sport was able to surprise the world champion of wrestling, who ended his career, when Ilonen opened up about why the glove is only held on one hand in golf.
– With the grip, the stress is more on the left hand if you are right-handed. A professional wears one glove a day, Ilonen specifies.
– There is already so much information here that I didn’t know before, Olli admitted.
The trio discussed how their species differ from each other. Having played professionally for 18 years, Ilonen considers the nature of golf to be different compared to many other sports.
– Anyone can accidentally hit the ball from here to that hole and say it was a holar. In quite a few sports such a performance is possible, Ilonen states.
– If I could catch a finger in wrestling and get a point for it, I might be able to do it. I wouldn’t be good at skiing, but I would be good at shooting, Ilonen continues.
Despite the difference in the sport, Ilonen said that snooker is a sport with many similar features to golf.
In addition to golf and snooker, Olli and Mäkäräinen learned about speed golf, where they were guided by a speed golfer Jari Pitkälä.
According to Pitkälä, the sport worked in the same way as golf, but you move around the field by running and you can only carry seven clubs with you.
Of course, the duo of the next round tried out how this sport would turn out for them. There were no hole-in-ones in the fast-paced round, even though the swings were on point. After reaching the goal, Ilonen wondered why Pitkälä plays better when running.
– We are separated by one thing. The fact that you are on top of the world in golf and I am an amateur. When we amateurs go to the ball, our brains are full of thoughts and distractions. As a professional, you can push them down. In Speedgolf, you just go to the ball and hit, and thoughts don’t bother you.
