Environment and Climate Minister Mykkänen (coordinator) thinks that Finland could build new schools for Ukrainian children.

According to the Ukrainian media, Russia has destroyed a school donated by Finland in the Hersoni region.

When the energy-efficient school was opened in 2016, the then Minister of Foreign Trade and Development was present Kai Mykkänen (collect.). Mykkänen works in the current government as Minister of Environment and Climate.

According to Mykkänen’s information, Russia has already disturbed the school before.

Last March, he visited Kiev, where he heard that Russia had looted school property during the occupation of Kherson.

– Valuable items were taken from the school, such as solar panels and computers, Mykkänen tells .

However, according to Mykkänen, the worst blow to the school was the breaking of the Kahovka dam last summer. Russia is considered to be the cause of the dam explosion.

According to Mykkänen’s opinion, the school has been out of use since the dam was destroyed. His information is based on second-hand information from Kherson, which has been obtained from, for example, local teachers and principals.

– The water then rose all the way inside the school, which of course made it unusable in itself. I also heard that the school’s principal at the time had tried to visit the school, but it was targeted by snipers and therefore too dangerous.

The school has been on Mykkänen’s mind during the war of aggression against Russia.

– There was an unusually cordial reception. They showed great gratitude in a lavish style, the opening was great.

In Mykkänen’s opinion, it would be natural for Finland to build new school facilities in Ukraine to replace the school that was already destroyed during the war.

– This is, of course, the matter of the current Minister of Foreign Trade and Development. Helping Ukraine is strongly prioritized in our development cooperation, which could include building schools and kindergartens.
