Kagame receiving over 99 percent of the vote in Rwanda’s presidential election | News in brief

President of Rwanda Paul Kagame is extending his reign for another five years.

According to the National Electoral Authority, Kagame was on track to receive more than 99 percent of the presidential vote after 79 percent of the votes had been counted. The two counter-candidates of the sitting president are both getting less than one percent of the vote.

Kagame has been the president of Rwanda since 2000 and the country’s de facto leader for longer. His administration has been widely criticized for silencing the opposition in Rwanda.
