Goalie Kaapo Kähkönen’s NHL career with the Winnipeg Jets is going to be shorter than expected.
The Winnipeg Jets have solved the “problem” of their three goalies and sent a Finn Kaapo Kähkönen28, to the NHL transfer list.
After the Canadian club’s decision, the Jets’ first and second goaltenders are Connor Hellebuyck and Eric Comrie.
In a competitive situation, Kähkönen lost his playing spot to Comrie, who was practically a year older.
It’s a surprising decision, as Comrie has been on a steep career slide in the past two seasons between the posts. In the 2023–24 season, he made ten saves in Buffalo with a weak save percentage of 87.4, winning only two fights.
Comrie’s last good season came when he made a save in Winnipeg in 2021-22. In the 19 games he played, the Canadian then stopped pucks with 92 percent and brought the Jets ten wins.
Kähkönen is a 4th round pick of the Minnesota Wild from 2014. He has 139 regular season games under his belt, 49 of which are wins. The goals against average is 3.33.
Last season, Kähkönen saved 31 games for the San Jose Sharks with a save percentage of 89.5. For the rest of the season, he appeared in the New Jersey Devils for six games with a save percentage of 92.3. Kähkönen had only seven winning games in the 2023–24 season.
Kähkönen, who is in his seventh season in the NHL, will receive a million dollars for this season.
