The Canadian Prime Minister is continuing his visit to South Korea until Thursday before heading to the G7 in Japan. The two countries have begun serious rapprochement in this year which celebrates the sixtieth anniversary of their bilateral diplomatic relations.

Canada hopes that South Korea will become one of its best friends in the world, as its relations with China visibly cool. Canada’s seventh largest trading partner, this country already has commercial interests in key mineral sites. He intends to take advantage of the resources available in Canada to free himself from his dependence on coal and the Middle Kingdom.

Justin Trudeau and his counterpart Yoon Suk-yeol have therefore been discussing for a few days ways to strengthen their economic ties, in the context of climate change. Among the projects discussed, the South Korean investment, with Japan, in LNG Canada, a liquefied gas export site intended for Asia installed in British Columbia, in the far west.

However, this honeymoon has a few hiccups. A manufacturer of electric batteries, associated with the South Korean LG Energy solution, has just interrupted the construction of a factory in Canada to claim more public support. A little embarrassed, Canadian leaders are in turn putting pressure on Ontario, the province where this project is settling.
