Seized by the association Water and rivers of Brittany, the administrative court of Rennes has just rendered an unprecedented decision. This is the first time that the State has been given a deadline to improve the fight against these green algae.
Concretely, and quickly, the State will have to better regulate and control the use of fertilizers on Breton farms. Fertilizers which, transported to the sea by rivers, are responsible for the green tides that Brittany is increasingly experiencing. As they decompose, these algae emit a potentially deadly gas in high doses.
Until now, actions to combat green algae were based on the voluntary participation of farmers. Without having had a sufficient effect on their proliferation.
Eau et rivières de Bretagne welcomes the court’s decision and believes that it is an additional reason for the State to finally act to meet the environmental, health and financial challenges posed by green algae.
