All participants received a daily dose of resistant starch equivalent to one unripe banana for an average of two years. Experts found that while it did not reduce the risk of bowel cancer, the dose reduced the risk of cancer developing in other parts of the body by up to 60 percent. was particularly strong for upper gastrointestinal cancers, including cancers of the esophagus, stomach, biliary tract, pancreas, and duodenum, which can be difficult to detect.

Professor Tim Bishop, a geneticist who participated in the study, said the results are exciting, but more research is needed.
“The results are exciting but the magnitude of the protective effect on the upper gastrointestinal tract was unexpected, so more research is needed to replicate these findings,” he said.
