Chairman of the parliamentary group of the Left Alliance and member of the parliament’s foreign affairs committee Jussi Saramo hopes that Ukraine will receive security guarantees from NATO at the Vilnius summit starting tomorrow.

– On the one hand, they must be credible, but nevertheless such that they do not incite or prolong war. Ukraine has been betrayed before when they have been given security guarantees. This is really not a very easy thing to do.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi stated in his visit to Helsinki in May that the country needs the same security guarantees as Finland.

The vice-chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee also participated in the A-studio discussion Sofia Vikman (collective), who considers the West’s long-term support for Ukraine absolutely important.

– Personally, I think that Ukraine must be able to organize security.

Ukraine’s possible NATO membership is also on the agenda of the NATO summit, which Zelenskyi demands signs of promoting. Saramo states that there are two sides to the matter.

According to Saramo, accepting a warring country as a member would take the entire defense alliance to war. On the other hand, the message that Ukraine will join NATO after the end of the war could also make Russia prolong its attack.

– Now we have to play wisely and look further into the future.
