The judo events at the Olympic Games will take place from July 27 to August 3. Discover the full schedule.
Judo has been one of the flagship sports of the Olympic Games for several editions. Present since the Tokyo Games in 1964, judo has distributed 15 gold medals at each Olympiad: 7 for women, 7 for men and a mixed team event since the Tokyo Games. As the national sport in Japan, it is the Land of the Rising Sun that historically dominates the medal table at the Olympic Games, ahead of France and South Korea.
For the French team, judo should be an opportunity to see an increase in the collection of medals. Best judoka in history, Teddy Riner could become the most medalist in history if he wins a sixth medal. In the other medal chances, Clarisse Agbegnenou hopes to retain her title in the under 63 kilos category this Tuesday, July 30. The Federation aims to fight for medals in all categories. In total, judo could bring up to ten medals to France.

11:34 – Agbegnenou passes in pain
Clarisse Agbegnenou won her first fight in the under 63 kilos category against the Israeli Gili Sharir this Tuesday morning at the Arena Champ-de-Mars. But the Frenchwoman, reigning Olympic champion, suffered to get rid of the European vice-champion. It took more than 8 minutes for the 31-year-old judoka to snatch the decision, by waza-ari during the Golden Score, following a move initiated by her opponent that she managed to counter. She is now qualified for the round of 16.
11:05 – The European champion on the mat
First little surprise of the day in the under 63 kilos category with the elimination of the reigning European champion Renata Zachova at the start of the competition. However, the Czech had inherited a particularly difficult draw when facing the Hungarian Szofi Ozbas. Third in the World Championships in 2023, the latter won by waza-ari and therefore qualified for the round of 16 of the Olympic tournament.
10:27 – Already a strong performance for Djalo in the round of 16
A big outsider in his category like Joan-Benjamin Gaba was on Monday, Alpha Oumar Djalo obviously hopes to imitate his compatriot, silver medalist yesterday in -73kg. The draw is however tough like the round of 16 that awaits him against Azeri Zelim Tckaev, 6th in the world and used to places of honor and podiums. He won this year’s Grand Slam of Baku at home and took 2nd place in the prestigious Grand Slam of Paris-Bercy. Very heavy therefore for the 27-year-old Frenchman, 26th in the world ranking.
10:15 – The ladies are off, Agbégnénou in the 12th fight on the program
The day is launched in the women’s -63kg category. The Korean Jisu Kim qualified during the first fight of the day, defeating the Portuguese Barbara Timo on ippon (kata-gatame).
10:13 – It’s going well for Djalo
The only ones in the 32nd final (the others enter the competition in the 16th final), the Frenchman Alpha Oumar Djalo and the Egyptian Abdelrahman Abdelghani opened the day in -81kg. The Frenchman emerged victorious from this fight by waza-ari and joined the 16th final.
08:00 – Agbegnenou’s big day?
Three years after her demonstration in Tokyo, the queen of judo Clarisse Agbegnenou has a date with history to win a third Olympic title, the second in individual. The Frenchwoman, who returned from maternity in 2023, had again won the world title a few months after her return but has suffered more in recent months with a 7th place in the European Championship then a bronze medal at the last World Championships, far from her total superiority of yesteryear. Unseeded, she inherited a difficult draw, illustrated by an entry into the competition against the Israeli Gili Sharir, the reigning vice-champion of Europe.
