Judge in Nieuwegein ‘supermarket war’: brand new Aldi may remain open for the time being

Judge in Nieuwegein supermarket war brand new Aldi may remain

Politically incensed about ‘messing around’ around Aldi

At the beginning of this year, the Nieuwegein opposition parties reacted with bewilderment to the tug-of-war surrounding the newly opened Aldi. D66 called it “messy (…) and clumsy” that the municipality has not given other supermarkets the opportunity to start at that location.

Local party Everyone’s Interest emphasized that this case would cost “a lot of community money”. “The college has dropped stitches,” said the VSP. At the time, coalition parties were reluctant to give a substantive response. The alderman then said that he would not comment as long as the matter is still before the court.
