Her name is Louise Joy Brown, she is now 46 and the world’s first “test tube baby”, conceived in the UK through in vitro fertilization (IVF). His birth opened a new chapter in medicine relating to the treatment of infertility and it is this crazy event that occurred in 1978 that the new Netflix film wants to tell.

Available since November 22, 2024, the English fiction follows the point of view of Jean Purdy, the nurse and embryologist, without whom this medical advance could not have happened (and who also died prematurely in 1985 at the age of 39 ). The idea for the film came from a couple of screenwriters, Jack Throne and Rachel Mason, who themselves experimented with in vitro fertilization.

To play this trio of scientists, the production chose Thomasin McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit, Last Night in Soho) for the role of Jean Purdy, James Norton for that of Robert Edwards (Grantchester, The Daughters of Doctor March) and Bill Nighy (Love Actually) for Doctor Patrick Steptoe.
