A Filipino journalist and radio personality broadcast live on Facebook when he was murdered in his home.
The perpetrator fired two shots before fleeing on a motorcycle.
“The act is even more heinous because it took place in Jumalon’s home,” said a representative of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP).
57-year-old Juan Jumalon, also known as DJ Johnny Walker, was shot in the head during a live broadcast by a gunman on Sunday morning.
According to police, the suspect entered Jumalon’s home, where he also has his studio, by claiming to be a listener who wanted to make a statement on his live show.
Once inside, the unidentified perpetrator reportedly fired two shots that hit Jumalon in the head. In the video clip from the broadcast, which captured the entire sequence of events, Jumalon is seen slowly sinking back into his chair while background music from the program plays.
Escaped on a motorcycle
The perpetrator then approached and ripped off the journalist’s gold necklace before fleeing on a motorcycle with another man who was waiting for him outside the residence.
According to The Guardian the perpetrator’s face should not have been caught in the picture and an intensive investigation is now underway to identify him.
Juan Jumalon was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Dangerous country for journalists
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr strongly condemns the murder of the journalist and ordered the police to “quickly bring the perpetrators to justice”.
“Attacks on journalists will not be tolerated in our democracy and those who threaten the freedom of the press will face the consequences of their actions,” he said in a statement.
The Philippines is one of the world’s most dangerous countries for journalists.
According to the country’s journalists’ union, the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP), 199 journalists have been murdered since the democratization of the country in 1986.
“The act is even more heinous because it took place in Jumalon’s home,” said a representative of the union in a statement.
