Journalist killed in Jenin: “end impunity for killers

The National Union of Journalists (SNJ) denounces this heinous crime and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) files a complaint with the International Criminal Court.

Shireen Abu Akley, a journalist with Al Jazeera, was murdered in Jenin (Occupied Palestinian Territories) on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, while covering the events there for her television.
She was an experienced journalist and well known in the profession. It seems that she was deliberately targeted and killed by a bullet in the head. She was clearly identifiable as she was wearing a protective vest with the words “Press”.

The context was calm. The Israeli army is blamed.

The National Union of Journalists (SNJ), the first organization of the profession in France, denounces this murder and wishes to assure the head of the Al Jazeera office in Ramallah, Walid al-Omary, of its solidarity. The SNJ extends its condolences to him and to all the colleagues of Shireen Abu Akley and her family.

This assassination cannot go unpunished

The SNJ recalls that several Palestinian journalists have been killed in the exercise of their profession and many injured without those responsible being denounced and condemned.

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), the largest representative body of journalists in the world with 600,000 members in 150 countries, has filed a complaint with the International Criminal Court and intends to add this murder to its ongoing cases.
