On May 5, 1945, there was a rumor that liberation was in sight. The resistance in Leersum decided to come together to take the Mova brick factory for the allies who were on their way. But it went wrong.
On the way to the factory, three resistance members were stopped at the Galgenbos in Leersum by Dutch SS men who stayed in houses on the Lomboklaan. A firefight ensued, in which the three resistance fighters and an SS man were killed. The SS men then arrested random civilians in revenge and brought them to the Lomboklaan. They were obliged to look at the bodies on the sidewalk.
Other resistance members did arrive at the brick factory, but they were met by Germans who had been informed of their plans. Two of them, the Van Dijk brothers, were killed in an attempt to flee. Look at here a reconstruction of the drama with eyewitness accounts.
