Jorge Trias Sagnierlawyer and former deputy of the PP, has died in Barcelona this Wednesday, according to reports elDiario.es. Trías was hospitalized after suffering from COVID, but had apparently recovered. He was discharged and a few days ago he was admitted again.

Trías was the one who photocopied the known as Papers of Bárcenas and leaked them to the newspaper EL PAÍS, which published them in 2013, causing a great media stir at a social level.

Born on July 13, 1948 (he was 73 years old), Trías was the father of three daughters and was an outstanding lawyer during more than 40 years of professional careerincluding the defense of Judge Javier Gómez de Liaño and Violeta Friedman, a survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp, in front of SS General Leon Degrelle.

His case was more mediatic was the one that linked him to Bárcenas, to whom he gave support once charged in the Gürtel plot. He also helped the former treasurer of the PP in his dealings with the press at that time.

Writer and columnist

Trías recounted all his experience in the case in the book The Dance of Corruptionwhich was published in 2018. Writer, poet and columnist in THE COUNTRY Y ABC, was a deputy for Barcelona in Congress for four years, between 1996 and 2000, during the Aznar government. “I was happy to do it,” he explained.

Nevertheless, his relationship with the PP ended badly once Los Papeles de Bárcenas was published. EL PAÍS collects a forceful statement from him: “The Gürtel case showed that if you commit with the truth and you take a step forward you stay more alone than one. The loneliness I had from 2013 to 2016, when I decided to close in Madrid and return to Barcelona, ​​was tremendous.”

He was brother of well-known philosopher Eugenio Trías and his father was Carlos Trías, also a lawyer and politician. His family belonged to the bourgeoisie of Barcelona and was known to be a good reciter of verses.
