The two-time StarCraft 2 world champion Joona “Serral” Sotala is once again one of the early favorites for the World Championships. The tournament will be shown live on Areena and Twitch.tv.
Finnish e-sports star Jonah “Serral” Military will defend his world title this week at the Starcraft 2 World Championship in Poland.
The World Championships, which will be played in connection with the traditional e-sports event in Katowice, will gather 36 of the world’s best SC2 players in Poland. At the same time, the tournament culminates last year’s professional tour of the game, the ESL Pro Tour.
In addition to the championship trophy, the winner of the World Cup is also offered a slice of the prize pool of $150,000. In total, half a million dollars in prize money will be distributed to the players.
The tournament starts on Wednesday with the qualifying phase, where 16 players compete for four spots in the main tournament. There are no Finnish players in the qualifying stage this year, as Sotala has received a direct invitation to the group stage based on the points collected during the tour year.
The group games starting on Thursday will be played in four groups of six players, with the group winners advancing directly to the quarterfinals. Those who finished second and third in the group, on the other hand, will play in the quarterfinals for places in the top eight.
The tournament culminates in the final day, which starts with the quarterfinals on Sunday. The name of the world champion will be decided on Sunday evening at 22:30 in the final.
