Jönköping does not have the right to limit the number of e-scooters in the municipality because it is against the Public Order Act, according to the county administrative board, reports Jönköpings-Posten.

Earlier this autumn, the municipality made a decision to introduce restrictions on how many electric scooters there may be. In addition, there would be a requirement to apply for a permit, with reference to public order. The municipality considered that no more than 450 electric scooters from two companies would be allowed to be in use.

Johan Nilsson, county lawyer at the county board, believes that the electric scooters do not create problems in the entire municipality. The municipality’s decision is also primarily aimed at the rental companies and not those who use the e-scooters.

The electric scooter is classified as a one-person vehicle just like mopeds and bicycles – where similar permit requirements do not exist.

– The municipality cannot make its own interpretations of regulations that are already regulated. Then there will be double regulation, says Nilsson to the newspaper.
